BATON ROUGE — The state Senate approved legislation Wednesday categorizing climate-related land loss as unsolicited charitable donations to the Gulf of Mexico, nullifying litigation against energy firms.

Proponents argued homeowners cannot sue for property they willingly gave away. "Legally, you can't claim damages on a gift," said Senate Committee Chair Wayne Laiche. "The water didn't take it. The owners offered it."
