WASHINGTON — Organizers of the Trump administration’s “Revive the Nation” prayer rally on the National Mall confirmed Thursday that the event will showcase a stunning display of religious diversity by including speakers from no fewer than two distinct strains of evangelical Christianity, a move one advisor called “a radical opening to the full breadth of our shared faith tradition.”
The programming, released by the White House Office of Faith-Based and Neighborhood Partnerships, lists 47 speakers, 46 of whom self-identify as nondenominational megachurch pastors who believe the earth is 6,000 years old. The 47th is a Southern Baptist who believes the earth is 6,000 years old but expresses it with a slightly different worship-band tempo.
“This isn’t your grandfather’s prayer breakfast,” said rally coordinator Dwayne Haskett, gesturing toward a stage diagram that included separate green rooms for speakers who use the New International Version and those who use the English Standard Version. “We have charismatics who speak in tongues and charismatics who are still polite about it. That’s two wings of a very big tent.”
Organizers said the event’s unity theme, “One Nation Under God, As We Define Him,” would be cemented by a closing ceremony in which all speakers join hands to pray for the Supreme Court to revisit Obergefell.
