SALT LAKE CITY — The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints confirmed Monday it is issuing retroactive licensing fees to excommunicated members for every instance they uttered the term "Mormon" prior to departure. Legal teams are auditing personal journals. Affected members report wage garnishments.

"Usage constitutes brand endorsement," said Church Legal Counsel Elder Mark B. Jensen. "Memory of the term remains a proprietary asset."
