WASHINGTON — The Senate Judiciary Committee voted Tuesday to exempt lawmakers from federal surveillance statutes. Chair Grassley called the review of members' messages 'procedurally unacceptable,' despite authoring the laws permitting such access for citizens.

The DOJ agreed to purge the data. "Privacy is a constituent benefit, not a congressional obligation," said Committee spokesperson Helen Pryce.
